We want to invite you to participate with your contribution in a “datapaper” type article on the distribution and diversity of ants in Colombia. Our objective is to assemble a dataset of ant species (and morphospecies)  occurrence data present in the country. This information, in addition to allowing us to establish more clearly the geographic distribution of ants in Colombia, will serve as the basis for future associated studies.

INSTRUCTIONS TO PARTICIPATE

What are we looking for?

  • Records of the occurrence of ants in the Colombian territory that have some level or certainty of taxonomic verification.

  • Data compiled from biological collections that have not been published in diversity repositories and similars (GBIF, AntWeb, AntMaps, etc.).

  • If the data are literature that has recently been published and/or were not found published in diversity repositories and similar (GBIF, AntWeb, AntMaps, etc.). In this case, it is recommended to send it as a particular data set.

How do we prefer the records?

  • Identifications are preferred to be at the species level, otherwise at the genus level with morphospecies code.

  • All records must have sampling date and geographic coordinates as precise as possible.

  • The inclusion of museum codes or identifiers that will recognize the identity of the record is preferred.

  • Records follow the format indicated in the instructions.

*All the published information will be under your authorization

  Instructions for sending the records

  1. The records should be sent following the attached spreadsheet (or version you can download from the project page https://antsofcolombia.wixsite.com/antsofcolombia). The columns correspond to the fields of the DarwinCore standard according to the version published by the GBIF at https://github.com/gbif/ipt/wiki/occurrenceData.

  2. Minimum fields to include:

    • baseOfRecord: record type (eg "PreservedSpecimen")

    • Scientific name: scientific name

    • identifiedBy: name of who identified the material.

    • eventDate: collection or registration date (dd / mm / yyyy).

    • taxonRank: indicate if the identification is a genus or a species (use: "species" or "genus").

    • decimalLatitude: latitude in decimal degrees (about ~ 5 decimal places).

    • Decimal Longitude: Latitude in decimal degrees (about ~ 5 decimal places).

    • stateProvince: name of the department.

    • locality: name of the locality.

    • InstitutionCode: name of the collection/institution that owns the material (if applicable).

    • catalogNumber - Catalog number.

    • recordBy: name of collectors (as).

  3. If you want to include more fields, it is recommended to use the DarwinCore fields that you can consult at https://dwc.tdwg.org/terms/ .

  4. Complete the form available on the project page https://antsofcolombia.wixsite.com/antsofcolombia This will request the data of the authors of the dataset, some metadata about it, and that you declare that you have permission to share/publish the records in the event and that these are deposited in some institution(s).

  5. Send the dataset to the email project.hormigas.colombia@gmail.com

*We encourage all studies to be made under the most specific taxonomic level, so we will be able to understand species biology and distributional patterns in detail for the country.
